GYROS REVIEW 2

So we didn’t stay in Turkey as long as planned, choosing to go hard in Greece instead. You might think, ‘Oh no! No more döner kebab!’. And you would be right, but the greeks have invented this wonderful little thing called Gyros, and in my opinion? It’s even better. Meat roasted on a vertical spinner and thinly sliced, but instead of a wrap, you get it wrapped up in a pita with tomato, onion, tzatziki, plus other fillings depending on the place. And because we’re not in a Muslim country any more, pork is back on the menu baby.

Gyros Review 1:

Description: Pork Gyros
Location: Mama Mika Restaurant, Rhodes Old Town
Price: 3 Euro
Rating: 7/10
Review: Promising start to season two of local meat wrapped in a flatbread review! This specimen was takeaway from a restaurant in the centre of the very touristy old town in Rhodes. The rest of the menu was quite expensive, but 3 euro for a takeaway gyros was the perfect first night in Greece dinner. This gyros was very good simply for the fact that we hadn’t had pork in a long time, and it really hit the spot. It was let down slightly by the fact that we walked 30 minutes back to the hostel to eat it and it was slightly cold and the chips were soggy. Was also slightly under sized. Taste was good though, and I was stoked to have tzatziki.

Gyros Review 2:

Description: Kontosouvli Gyros
Location: Psitopolis Restaurant, Rhodes Town
Price: 3.90 Euro
Rating: 10/10
Review: First 10 of the season has been claimed! You might say ‘No Finn, you can’t give out 10’s, there’s always room for improvement, nobody is perfect!’ I say, you clearly haven’t been to Psitopolis in Rhodes, and also this is my review series so I can do what I want. This restaurant is well out of the way, right on the edge of the city in Rhodes, nowhere near anything touristy. We only found it because of a local we met and chatted to for several hours on the ferry, and he recommended both the place and menu item, and never has a local pulled through any harder. First off, it was huge. I could barely walk afterwards, they packed such a huge amount of meat into that little pita wrap. We still don’t really know what Kontosouvli is, but I can tell you it’s the most delicious style of pork on the planet. Big, juicy chunks of tender meat, perfectly spiced. And the tzatziki! Creamy, garlicy, fresh. So incredible. Topped off with warm soft pita, chips and veges???? It was so indescribable, you simply have to visit Rhodes just for this restaurant, it’s that good. The photo I took does it zero justice. Yes we went back the next day.

Gyros Review 3:

Description: Pork Gyros
Location: Amalia Taverna, Apolakkia, Rhodes
Price: 2 Euro!
Rating: 6/10
Review: On a circumnavigation of the Rhodes Island, we drove through a tiny town and immediately screeched to a halt upon seeing a sign for 2 euro gyros. Right on lunchtime, how could we not? Went into this cute little place, and it took aaaages to come out, because Ben and Sam ordered some meat sharing plater that must have needed to be shipped over from Athens. While we waited, we were treated to witnessing the strange spectacle of watching the old lady waitress who ran the place beef with the old lady who ran the tavern 20 metres away. Every time a car drove past, both women would wave and point at carparks in front of their respective restaurants. It was the most outrageous turf war I have ever witnessed. Anyway, the food eventually came out, and for 2 euro it was okay. Bit light on the meat, overall flavours good but nothing that stood out. Not particularly bad, just overall below average. Again, it was two euro, so can’t really complain. 6 out of 10 (We went back to Psitopolis that night.)

Gyros Review 4

Description: Pork Gyros (picking up a theme?)
Location: Bahar Souvlakeri, Rhodes Town
Price: 3.6 Euro
Rating: 8/10
Review: This was another absolutely stellar recommendation from our Greek friend on the ferry. We tried this one twice (once at midnight after a few beers, once as a goodbye lunch to Rhodes), both times to great satisfaction. It had everything you’re looking for in a gyros, good amount of fillings, the chips in this one were particularly tasty. To be honest, nothing really too noteworthy about it in particular, was just an all around solid gyros. Decent size, decent price, good flavour, good service. Recipe for a solid rating.

Gyros Review 5:

Description: Pork Gyros
Location: Attikon Restaurant, Kamena Vourla
Price: 2.5 Euro
Rating: 9/10
Review: The greeks are smashing it with these gyros. We pulled in late after the drive from Athens, as we had to wait until 11PM to check into our AirBnB, and I’m so glad we did. For the price, these gyros were unbeatable. For starters, they came to the table less than 2 minutes. They weren’t premade, we watched the man at the grill slice the meat and pack the pitas, he was just a machine. Of course that made everything so much better. Hot, fresh meat. Crispy chips. Cold, tangy tzatziki. I still can’t get over how much food you get for 2.5 Euro when the rest of the menu is 8+. And all of the restaurants are like this! Was such a good end to a slightly stressful day, we all were so stoked. The atmosphere was great too, nothing but locals in the shop, very friendly old waiter who kept speaking to us in greek even after it was clear we didn’t understand a word. And free water! A rarity in European restaurants. At least one of us has visited this place for another gyros once a day while we’ve been in Kamena Vourla, and the relationship we’re building with the owner is only making the experience better.
